NEWS QUOTE OF THE DAY

Imus and PBS host Jim Lehrer talk about the mounting death toll of American soldiers from the war in Iraq which hit 2,000 on Tuesday.

Jim Lehrer: "I have the same thing in my background that you have which is been in the Marine Corps. I grieve for all these kids and their families. Whatever the politics and whatever happens, why we went to war, why we should or should not have gone or whatever, we always have to remember that our wars are fought by our people and these kids die. And there's no such thing as an easy war. There's no such thing as a bloodless war and we as you know, at the end of our program, not every night, but we run pictures of the people who die. Last night I did at the top of the program, did a little run through with a guy from Military Times about who these 2,000 dead Americans are. Where they come from. You know, gender, race, income level, all that sort of stuff and what he essentially said was when all is said and done, that's true. A cross section of us, they are, they truly are us. And that's I think is the message of the 2,000, frankly, is that, just remember who these kids are, who these people are. They're our neighbors, they're the people that, the children of our friends and all of that. That's the message of the 2,000 to me."
