Terri Schiavo started the big shift. Now it's a snowball effect. Katrina, Delay, Frist, Rove, Cheney, 2000 dead, election fraud, gas gouging, cronyism, Miers, pork barrel spending, bridges to nowhere, etc. All make the snowball get bigger.

Democrats can sort out their minor differences. A few Lieberman types may get ostrasized. But I would not want to be a Repub running for re-election next year unless I were a Hagel type openly critical of the White House.
