The tough part comes when the covert operative identity's already been blown, as may well have been the case here, or where there is no longer any need to protect the covert identity, which also seems to have possibly been the case here.

In that case Scooter may be in trouble. According to neighbors that were interviewed - even though they were on very neighborly terms - they even played cards together, they did not know her occupation.

To suggest such excuses such as Plame was only a convert operative for a short period of time or that she didn't do important covert activity is the kind of denial that gets people in trouble.

I agree however that people like Libby and Rove are too smart to really do anything unlawful - but when you get into denial mode - anything can happen.
