Hey, Exxon is beloved in these parts. The old Std. Oil of NJ and all.

I used to have a fair amount of XON/XOM, but you know how it goes :) Earlier this year, I doubled up at 51, I guess out of a sense of guilt and trying to help karma. I broke down this Spring though, and sold 3/4 of it to double up on Flotek. One doesn't exactly admit this sort of thing to the neighbors (loaded with the stock), but I gave some indications that I had sold much of my stock. I got a funny look, as if I had gone crazy. "Exxon is such a good stock...they pay a great dividend". I did Ok, but I still feel guilty about it :)

"the largest quarterly profit for a U.S. company ever"

Here's the thing I don't get about high prices at the pump... Does it cost oil companies more to sell gas than it did a year ago? Do they pay the guys that drill the holes more? Did the machinery go up? Do the truckers get paid more? The gas station attendants? Did the land they drill on get more expensive?

No. So somebody is pocketing a helluva lot more money now than a year ago. The money is going somewhere. Apparently to Jeffrey's neighbors<g>.
