re: We need windfall profits taxes on Big Oil.

We're too busy giving them "windfall" tax breaks disguised as an "energy bill".

We need energy efficiency, starting now. The only good part of having 5% of the world's population and using 25% of the world's energy is that there is a huge opportunity for easy improvement.

We are taking a precious, finite commodity and wasting more than 50% every mile we drive. Up in fumes. More than 50% of the dollars that are sucked out of the economy today by gasoline purchases are waste and inefficiency. Dollars that could be productive going up in fumes. And we're making the repressive Arab governments exceedingly rich and powerful.

The solution is easy... all it takes is just a little bit of leadership and courage.

John

RE:"We need windfall profits taxes on Big Oil."

You can start by not driving.

What we need is the car buying public to stop buying huge SUVs because all their friends have one....

We need more people using mass transportation...

Maybe the rising cost of gas/oil will finally make people think twice about their consumption...

When politicians "fight" Big Oil - by imposing additional regulations, prohibitions, and taxes - oil companies' task of exploration and development gets harder. The supply of oil and gasoline thus gets reduced, causing prices to go up. Politicians again scapegoat Big Oil for the high prices, and the vicious circle continues...
