I agree with you- I'm just talking about perception. The "small government" folks really mean they don't want to spend money on things like social security, medical, medicaid, disaster relief for the poor, schools, nasty things like that. What small government folks don't talk about quite as often are tax breaks for corporations, subsidies, letting corporations get away with making our environment filthy, and then letting either the taxpayers clean it up, or not having anyone clean it up- to the detriment of the (usually) poor/middle class folks who live in the middle of the filth.
