my company's contract with aetna doesn't cover flu shots.

I see. It wasn't clear to me where you got your shot. When I was working, my employer set up a clinic in the office and just handed out the shots. It was separate from any health insurance that employees might have.

I thought most companies did that nowadays because it costs them less to inoculate everyone than to have people out with the flu.

I had Aetna on my last house. When I moved they quoted me $400 and I paid it. Then they jumped it to $600 just after I moved in and I cancelled and bought State Farm for $350. They threatened to sue me for the $200 so I wrote the state insurance department and got my $400 back.
