The goal isn't to eradicate marijuana but rather just one of thousands of schemes to bankrupt taxpayers by making pay to house these people exercising their own freedoms.

Meanwhile tests in the UK prove marijuana isn't so bad for you after all. Can even increase brain activity and does not cause lung cancer the way cigs do.

The main reasons marijuana is illegal in this country is that the big pharmas and timber companies would lose money if people could grow their own anti-depressants and we could make paper out of fast-growing hemp plants.

Great post Buddy, "* There is, on average, one marijuana arrest every 41 seconds."

This is a national shame.
So what kind of effect is this having? Say you work for the narcotics branch of a police department and things have been a bit slow. What are you going to do to keep the money flowing from the Gov't? Arrest any poor schmuck that happens to want buy a joint in order to bolster your arrest numbers. Say the person you arrest was a laid off electronics engineer or a college student. Guess what, now you have 2 people that would otherwise be or have the potential to be productive citizens with felonies on their records. Now the engineer can no longer get a job as an engineer and whatever the college student was trying to be is no longer viable..........

BTW, I know the electronics engineer, he's a friend of mine that used to be in the Navy and had lead a productive life until this drug bust ruined it.

When I was 19, I was arrested for possession of marijuana. What kind of effect could that have had on my life? Fortunately for me, possession was a misdemeanor in the state (NH) I was arrested in. If it had been a felony that arrest might of prohibited me from joining the military and having a successful 20 year career.

"... the War on Drugs is first and foremost a
war on casual marijuana use..."

Really it's like self flagellation. Marijuanna smokers are not enemies of the state, they harm no one, not even themselves. An old UN report said more than 77-million Americans had smoked pot... I guess we need more prisons to hold this substantial number of citizens, huh?

Oh yes, let's not forget that this prohibition also corrupts the police, as it did during alcohol's prohibition.

You might find this website of interest. It is "Law Enforcement Against Prohibition."
