The latest estimate I heard was around 79K, compared to 70K in Lisbon. Single family wooden frame houses like we have in the USA are relatively safe in a quake. However, in our midwest there are many larger buildings not built to earthquake standards that would become violent seismic bombs in a major earthquake.

The underlying rock formations in the midwest USA, unlike the west coast, are highly uniform and thus can transmit earthquake energy great distances. A major quake on the New Madrid fault could cause very widespread damage and a global economic shock wave. Imagine shipping on the Mississippi River shut down for several years, the Memphis Fedex hub destroyed, etc. We aren't prepared for it.
