Part of the talk about windfall taxes on oil companies is a search for new revenue as a way for politicians to avoid cutting excessive spending.

The discussion of taxes on oil profits pushed down energy stocks today. There may be some real bargain soon.

Chances are good that the inditements of Scooter Libby et al will push ALL US stocks down for the next few days.

The royalty trusts may make a short term bottom soon, maybe afeter this months dividend ex-div date - which is around Oct. 30 for many trusts.

The didivend for mid November will be based on selling prices for August 2005. Much of August 2005 pricing was set during the BID WEEK of July 2005, which is about the 3rd or 4th week in the month. July oil prices were higher, but natural gas was not.

Buying in early November will give you prices set in late August (close to Katrina time) for September. That dividend will arrive in mid December. January dividend will be a record, with Februrary even more.

I have been having some fun buying puts on housing stocks - LEN and BZH. I try to buy when the short term rallies run out of steam, then wait for tne next drop. Great fun.

Also trying to do the same with retail (ANF) and resturants (OSI).

I have held some energy stocks too long, and I have gotten hit hard. I expect a stromg recovery with cold weather, which seems to happen every year....

Note the next few days are warmer, then we get this for next few months...

Elmat,

That is a pretty good analysis of runaway US government spending. Check out this view of Ketchikan, Alaska, where Congressman Don Young got federal funding for a $250 million bridge to replace the ferry to the airport. I've taken the ferry and it's perfectly adequate. I don't think we need the bridge...
