Your post confirms the presence of Communists in Vietnam, and our intent to contain it. Naturally. Your unrelated notion that we had our asses kicked, is extremely debatable given the oft discussed ways in which we tied our own hands. To say that history repeats itself, is far from seen to date. The Tet offensive was literally a disaster for the Vietcong at a time when America was increasingly unwilling to fight. President Nixon dictated that we should end the war. While the war lasted into Nixon's 2nd term (until '74), Nixon began withdrawing troops in his first term, and soldiers drafted in '69 for 2 year tours recieved 6 month early outs in '71 due to the lack of need during the troop drawdown.

Just thought I'd add some flesh to your story, and hopefully correct some wrong impressions it may leave readers.
