Republicans expect Bush to nominate conservatives. Wrong, not Republicans in general. Surely not Senators Spectre and Hatch. They wanted to give Meirs a fair hearing in keeping with American values that every person deserves their day in court. It is Brownback, Bork and Co. that suppressed her right to a fair hearing. It is possible that she would have impressed her doubters just like Roberts, who off course was very impressive in the hearings that he managed to win over Democratic Senators in the Senate vote.
