Vietnam was a Civil War and had nothing to do with the communist Soviets or Chinese. That connection to the Chinese and Soviets was the main reason given for going to war there, along with the phony Gulf Of Tonkin attack, which never happened. You should see the film "Fog Of War" where Robert McNamara explains how wrong we were, and how we really had no business being there in any numbers. Same thing can be said for Iraq. Our very occupation of the place creates the war. Or at least escalates it into a major big deal.

BTW: If you look at Vietnam now, it is a communist country and it's relatively benign. Communist CHina is also our largest trading partner. We don't like communism in this country, but communists without evil intent toward us are not necessarily a threat. In fact they're often much less of a threat than religious fanatics and rightwing dictators. Or even extremists inside our own country.
