Re: This time, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has likened Germany to US arch-enemy Cuba, while there have been calls in the mainstream US media to strip France of its veto in the UN Security Council and denunciations of European "ingratitude" in the US.

Well... that article was written in February 2003, that is, when Schroeder was still chancellor. As for stripping France of its UN veto, I'm afraid it's but an idle threat... What? Does the US really wish to end up the only lily-white power in the UNSC, face to face with China, India, Brazil, and other Arab and Muslim powerhouses (Indonesia, Egypt, Nigeria,...)? With only Russia, Britain and Israel as its faithful allies? France is still home to about 550,000 Jews --who can always be counted on to support the US agenda... Although the French Jewry is not as powerful as its US counterpart, it nonetheless boasts an influential elite in politics, media, and finance. How strong is the Jewish lobby in China? India? Indonesia? and all the other UNSC wannabes? No, I tell you Searle: the yanks DON'T want to chuck out the French --not yet.

Re: By delaying military aid to NATO member Turkey, the European anti-war troika of Germany, France and Belgium punctured the balloon of a monolithic West that was flying high after September 11.

But Turkey has always opposed the Iraq war anyway! If only to foil one of its most "dreadful" byproducts, Kurdistan.... After all, that's why Judeofascists covertly oppose Turkey's EU bid, qualmish as they are of a Berlin-Paris-Ankara Axis.

To be sure, France --and, to a lesser extent, Germany-- has advocated an anti-US policy. But it's all rhetoric and gesticulation --and no action, no obstruction. Iraq, for that matter, is a good case in point: the French, Russian,... dogs barked, the Spanish dog copped out, but the US caravan rolled on.

Merkel intends to improve relations with Washington after they had come under immense strain during 2002 when Schröder had openly challenged President George W. Bush's plans to attack Iraq. Schröder, with strong support from the public, also pledged never to send German soldiers to Iraq. Merkel, who at one stage supported the war in Iraq but has since modified her views, does not intend to raise the issue of sending troops there. Her own foreign policy advisers concede that she would find little support for such a move.

Schröder also forged a close personal relationship with President Vladimir Putin of Russia, often, according to his critics, at the expense of raising issues such as human rights and the erosion of the rule of law.

During the election campaign, Merkel and her foreign policy advisers said they would take a tougher stance toward Russia, particularly over human rights. But in recent weeks the Christian Democrats changed their tune, saying they wanted "continuity" of relations with Russia.

However, the alliance that Schröder, Putin and President Jacques Chirac of France had built to oppose the war against Iraq will not be pursued by the incoming government. The Christian Democrats said the alliance divided Europe and damaged trans-Atlantic relations.

Expectedly, Mrs Angela Merkel, as a pro-US/Israel chancellor, opposes Turkey's full EU membership.
