How would thay feel if the someone in the West said we should nuke Mecca? You have to remember that to the Muslims, religion is more important than politics... unlike this country.

You can never have a Democracy when one small group at the top can veto the decisions made by the Democratic arm.

No question but its hard to keep people in their place when they are educated and participating in a free market economy. Its common knowledge the Ayatollahs have eased up on social strictures with the younger generation. To us, its not much.....they can wear western clothes, listen to their own music and wear a scarf over their heads instead of a veil but to them its a big deal. And to the Saudis and other Arabs, its major. And why did the Ayatollahs ease up? They were having student demonstrations every other nite. So they co-opted the young. They think they're being clever but in the end I think it will be their undoing.

But I agree with you that they have the Democratic infrastructure in place. The question in my mind is whether or not the typical Iranian agrees with their President's advice to wipe Israel off the map.

I don't think they do. Remember...the president is the former mayor of Teheran. They respected his capabilities but they did not like his conservatism. It wasn't likely he was going to win until Bush asked the Iranians not to vote for him. When you are the president of the US, you don't just do that. You've got to know the people of a foreign country will do just the opposite no matter what the consequences are. And given the history between Iran and the US, its even more likely. Imagine if Putin told the Poles to vote for a certain guy. The Poles would vote for the other guy even if he were incompetent and likely to bring the country to ruin.

It seems that most M.E. Muslims feel this way. As long as most, of them feel this way, then they are no better than Nazis in my mind.

They hate Israel. Israel was shoved down their throats. They weren't allowed any objection. If a superpower came and told Americans that they were moving the people of the Uruguay into FLA and make FLA a separate nation, how do you think most Americans would react? I am not saying the Muslims are being reasonable. They aren't. However, there usually isn't any reason in feuds like this.

And remember the Saudis et al also hate Iran......its just that they hate Israel more.

How would they feel if the West said that we should just wipe out all Muslim countries in the M.E., so that the world can have a little peace for a change. Hell, we're ALL tired of the relentless terrorism that they have managed to productionalize in their part of the world.

If you are tired of terrorism, then you need to pay more attention to what our gov't is doing. You invade a nation like Iraq and you cause all kinds of trouble. You support a man like Saddam in a war and you make all kinds of enemies.

I don't like the Muslim leaders.......I think they are full of horse puckey but we are not innocents in all of this........not by a long shot.

I think most ME Muslims feel that way. However, a better way to express it would be most ME Muslims believe that the lands that are Israel and Palestine should be a place where all religions can be practiced equally, all religions have equal rights under the law, and, as happens in EVERY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, when preference is given (eg, is the national weekend Friday or Sunday?) it should be given to the people/religion that have been there the longest. That would require wiping Israel (a "Jewish" state) off the map. It could be replaced by Palestine (a multi-ethnic, multi-religious state) where all people and religions have equal rights.

If expressed properly, I think most equality and freedom loving Americans would agree as well. The Muslims stink at PR, however, so instead of saying "make Israel-Palestine a one man, one vote country where all the adult population can vote" (sounds good to Americans, right), they come off as fanatical idiots threatening to nuke Israel.
