Three US soldiers killed in Iraq; two die in Kuwait

Three US soldiers were killed in two incidents in Iraq, the US military announced, as two more US servicemen were reported dead in neighbouring Kuwait.

Two soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in south Baghdad, and a third in a landmine explosion near Baiji, in north-central Iraq. Four more soldiers were injured in the landmine attack.

The US military Saturday also announced the death of non-combat related causes of two more US soldiers who were stationed in Kuwait as part of the operation in Iraq.

One died at Ali Al-Salem Air Base on October 25, and the second at Camp Victory on October 28, the US military said. The two facilities are located some 70 kilometers (44 miles) northwest of Kuwait City.

Some 15,000 US troops are stationed in Kuwait, which served as the main launchpad for the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. The emirate is also used as a transit point for coalition forces moving in and out of Iraq.

The Pentagon death toll of US service personnel killed in Iraq includes those soldiers attached to the mission, but based in other countries.

The latest deaths brought to 2,013 the number of US military personnel killed in the Iraq operation since the March 2003 invasion, according to an AFP tally.
