Phil > I think we are entering a dangerous phase. But so far, Russia seems contained. I wonder how long that will last.

I feel the big problems in the world today are
(1) Increasing demand for oil and its impending shortage,
(2) The insoluble situation with Israel/Palestine,
and that most conflicts or potential conflicts flow from those. In fact, the reasons the US went to war in Iraq are clearly based on those considerations. China and Russia don't worry me at this stage as potential military aggressors although China is very busy in Africa making deals with just about every African nation and expanding its influence wherever it can.

As far as danger is concerned, and taking a line through the US/USSR standoff, I feel that a bipolar world is safer than a unipolar one with only one dominant power, even if that power is the US. In fact, the US is no longer the kind and benevolent Uncle Sam it once was and it is clear, to me anyway, that it, too, has to be contained especially if its policy is to be determined by people like the neocons and George W Bush. In the circumstances, I am pleased to see a strong anti-US bloc developing, not because I seek war or the destruction of the US, but because I feel the world works better that way.

I don't see Russia as a threat because it has so many internal problems of its own.
