Basra car bombing causes carnage
A car bomb has exploded in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

There are reports that at least 20 people have been killed and many injured in the attack.

The blast happened at about 2030 local time (1730 GMT), in a commercial area of the British-controlled city containing many shops and restaurants.

Although car bombings are common in central and northern Iraq, the south, predominantly populated by Shias, has been comparatively peaceful.

However, there has been a recent upsurge in attacks in the region.

Rising violence

The attack appeared to have targeted local police vehicles, two of which were destroyed.

Six police officers were reported to be among the dead.

The area where the blast occurred was packed with families out for the evening during the Ramadan festival.

Reports from the scene describe scenes of carnage.

Another explosion, thought to have been caused by a rocket-propelled grenade, followed soon afterwards, close to the British forces' base in the city.

The BBC's David Willis, in the capital Baghdad, says recent months have seen an increase in sectarian violence in Iraq, with Sunni insurgents virtually declaring war on Shias.

A recent Pentagon report said that about 26,000 Iraqis had been either killed or injured in attacks by insurgents since January 2004.

================== Republican sponsored civil war, death, destruction, demolition and corruption....that is YOUR FAULT.

I blame YOU and everyone else who voted for this idiotic administration.

The Brits have been trying to leave the area in order to stave off civil war in Afghanistan. Even they realize that Bush is incapable of doing anything right so they're going to do it themselves.

I don't know what their situation is any longer since this is also spinning out of control.
