That's the entire problem. The Shiite Moslems would very much like to be free -- free of Iraq and especially free of the U.S. and its allies.

The Shiite region, which makes up the southern region of what we call Iraq, currently receive aid and covert assistance from Iran and would be delighted to become a part of Iran - a nation which exactly matches their values and lifestyle.

It will be very difficult for the United States to keep the Shiites and Kurds in bondage to Iraq.

As you suspect, they would dearly love to be free of Iraq and free of us.
