Although Roche has used the Star Anise fruit as a source of Shikimic acid (a carcinogen by the way), and has 90% of the world production under contract, there are other sources for this base ingredient for Tamiflu.

Shikimic acid was originally derived from the flower of a Japanese tree, Shikimi, and can be extracted in quantity from at least four other plants. Cipla, a very savvy Indian drug company wants to make Tamiflu -- and if their CEO Dr. Yusuf Hamied wants to make Tamiflu, I guarantee you he knows how he can do it without the Star Anise that Roche has under contract.

Shikimic Acid can also be synthesized from inorganic chemicals: . freepatentsonline.com
