The Fed is in a strange position: if they even hint at relaxing or ending the monthly fed funds increases, the aura of ""fighting inflation" is destroyed and Gold explodes. So Greenspan sticks with the current program and plays it safe. The new Fed Chairman takes over in February and policy may change. After a $14 two day plunge, Gold may have a "throwback" rally, but it wont carry far unless caused by a US$ meltdown which, right now, seems unlikely.
