I think it's more like the right wing that has maintained that Wilson maintained that the VP sent him. I think they do this to try to undermine Wilson. But every time I have read about Wilson's trip, he said that the CIA sent him.

Perhaps you have a link to the direct quote where Wilson supposedly said that the VP sent him? Since the VP asked the CIA to check into it, and Wilson was the one the CIA sent, it certainly could be said, and truthfully so, that Wilson was sent to Niger at the request of Cheney.

No where have I seen it said by Wilson that it was Cheney that called him up and said, "Joe...I need you to go to Niger".
