You have more faith in Republicans than I do. Republicans see a zero sum game because they wish to. They see that others must be poor in order for themselves to be rich.

They do not see a vast middle class as a good thing but, indeed, antithetical to their power. Republican power, like the robber barons they admire, depends on the vast majority of people to be ill-paid, uneducated, poor and, therefore, powerless to challenge them.
