As with QCOM patents, one issue with Tamiflu is, what are the alternatives? Turns out that there have been some very promising tests using antisense compounds to treat (successfully) six different flu viruses. Antisense compounds do not require any ingredient extracted from star anise or other naturally occurring substances but are synthesized. Antisense compounds work by targeting certain RNA, making the cells in a virus unable to reproduce. This seems to be a more effective alternative than Tamiflu, and probably less expensive.
