A continual walk down memory lane, thanks to the search feature on SI which I got because I finally got around to updating..:)
Anyway, A few posts from the past by yours truly just to show how much blood and treasure we and all could have saved, if ONLY open and analytical minds were in congress or AT least on their staff.. Oh boy... I have too much time on my hands today..

One thing on Powell's presentation today bothered me.
He shows an aerial photo of a large amount of stripped off soil around a suspected WMD manufacturing facility.
Where are the photos of the earth moving equipment doing it?. Where are the photos of the trucks hauling it away? and the dump site. With satellite and other aerial imagery flights continually watching these sites, they should be there. I don't know the size of the area, but it looked somewhat large. It couldn't have been done overnight IMO because a significant thickness of overburden would have to be stripped away to remove all traces of a chemical residue..
Modern chemical and geochemical trace analysis is so sensitive now days (my exploration expertise. <g>), many feet of material would have to be removed imo to get the residue, especially if they had used it for awhile. It is a dry climate, I imagine, but there still should have been some leaching, especially if the facility had been there awhile.
The weapon inspectors should be on a helicopter now, or already there to check this out.. And take a look, and then find THAT disposal site which also should leave a large footprint.. I know a little about reclamation too.. <g>
Anyway, just a thought..

Is certain things just don't add up in my mind. Based upon my experience as an exploration geologist. We used to have routine analysis at local commercial labs down to 10 PPB (parts per billion) for things like Au Ag, As, Sb, Hg, etc..They are good pathfinders for gold btw, especially that first one <vbg>... I don't have experience or know about organic substances but they should be equally sensitive, I would think... Also I would think the people doing this would have access to best analytical equipment and technicians in the world..
And those excavated sites could not have done, IMO, on a few hours notice with a phone call from a plant within the inspection team.. Maybe they are old photos from an old site that was cleaned up in the 90's. Maybe somebody duped POWELL.. I don't know.. I tried to catch a date, but couldn't.. Again, from my experience, when we flew an area. each frame was in numbered order and time stamped and dated.
And this almost continuous aerial survelliance should have caught a lot dust rising from the scrapers, dozers, trucks, front end loaders, etc.. They seemed to catch the trucks moving out the "goods" from that one other site.
I just don't know..

The reason I belabored the technical inconsistencies in POWELL's presentation last night was to point out the importance of being a critical listener and reader.. Especially when gathering facts.. On important issues..
He used the visuals as part of his "dog n' pony" show but never brought them to a logical conclusion.. In this case by not showing where the excavated material was disposed of. And the trucks delivering it.. If he didn't have that, it was no, or at best, very weak evidence.. If you can't do this, the presenter weakens his whole case.. Also he shouldn't have thrown in "hearsay". "Reports of" type stuff... Again It brings the case down to that level..AT worst for the future, IMO..
"Crying Wolf" for MY OWN AGENDA,,
Also when you try to sell something, in this case "WAR", (Ugh!!Jeeeus, what has the country come to :(...) You should throw in your case, a few things from the "other side" to GIVE THE APPEARANCE of being objective.. If I ever tried to "sell" a prospect like that, I would have been thrown out door halfway through..
Either this administration is lacking in basic skills, is arrogant and doesn't care, or knows the American populace is at a level of sophistication that they know they can get away with a BS case.. I think the latter..
Because I even read here on SI that some "fence sitters" were convinced by him and were ready "to go in" on that lousy weak presentation.., (not themselves,of course, but someone else)
Also, I heard today, that was the reason, Bush had to come out this afternoon and ask for another UN resolution.. POWELL didn't convince anyone except his cheer leaders and the easily swayed, in other words, the fearful or weak minded...
We will see,
