I'm not sure that is part of exploring one's group. That's part of what the opposition to a group does. What groups do is bond, and reinforce each other, and throw cookies, or bombs, or severed heads, or pictures of fetuses. (imo, of course)

I think groups tend mostly to explore their groupness by whom they exclude. That's why I'm not a group person. But since most people are group people, I can't very well suggest it is an abnormal thing, or something people "shoudn't" do. I don't like groups, but there here, and they seem very similar to me.
