On the other side of the equation, the fact that the mechanisms of the pandemic flu in attacking the young is better understood, advances in medicine may will eliminate many of the deaths.

"Young adults' vulnerability in a pandemic may be linked to the fatal overreaction of their strong immune systems. With a serious flu, the lungs may be flooded by too many immune cells, leading to inflamed tissues, clogged air passages and cells unable to properly absorb oxygen."

I would expect there are drugs to suppress immune system response. Also the use of antihistamines is far advanced.
