I think that Alito is going to surprise his supporters somewhere along the line. Maybe abortion, maybe something else.

I think I know which way Alito and Roberts will vote on abortion. I don't agree with them, but I udnerstand their pov.

Somehow I don't think these two are the same as Rehnquist, Scalia, and Thomas.

I have a feeling that even though they will vote differently on many issues, I think over time, Ginsberg, Breyer, and Stevens will have impact on them. More so than Scalia and/or Thomas.

There are many "good Catholics" who are personally opposed to abortion but not opposed to allowing others to have choice.

But I agree very strongly with CB, O'Connor, Laura, and Barbara that a woman should have been nominated.

If George W. Bush is qualified to be President of the United, than someone like CB is qualified to be 1 of 9 on th SC.

Simple logic.

I'm curious... what do you (US) people think would be the actual effect, in real life, if Roe vs Wade were overturned and (presumably) abortion was effectively illegal?

Thankfully this is not an exciting issue in the UK. Although I suspect any cause could get huge majority support to keep (and indeed enforce if not require) abortion simply by pointing out the social class [low], marital status [not] and maternal age [18-] of a dominant minority of mothers having abortions...

<edit> and of course the other major grouping here is middle-class mothers of 35+ having unwanted late or multiple pregnancies. A small group but not lacking in political clout.
