It both amazes and frustrates me that they know I am an American before I even open my mouth! I WANT to blend in. Another anecdote about this below.

The French wear different faces than the Americans. More taut. Also, speaking French tones the muscles around the mouth in a way that speaking American English does not. Just look at a bunch of pictures of people on the street. After a while you can just tell. The only question a Frenchman might ask is, American or Canadian?

The French have the reputation of being wimps, but in my experience, when they crack down, they crack down HARD

The French police have a long-standing reputation for toughness, even brutality. After all, immigrant communities around Paris are not a new problem, they date back centuries. One of the most distressing things to learn about the situation there is that the police have lost control of whole areas. This is new and different. It sounds like France of the 30s, when communists and fascists were battling it out in the streets.

Now that's a report I can relate to! I can't tell you how many times I've had similar conversations with people all over Europe similar to that, and in some of the strangest places.
