Was my post so long you couldn't read it all the way to the bottom? So sorry.

"And no, I'm not trying to sidestep the point. It seems anathema, in a democracy, to try to label political opposition as aiding the "enemy". I happen to think bush is aiding the enemy, and you are too if you support him, and I can make a good case for that (one that's been made by others, also) and I could certainly call you a "useful idiot" (useful to AQ, and other Islamists), but really what's the point in calling each other names? None that I can see, unless you enjoy name calling, simply to convert your personal "opinion" about people into epithets. That's the real question, is it important that anti-communist conservatives called people names, and should we care that you want to call names now? I think we should point out the poverty of that kind of sport, myself."

It's not about the meaning of "is" - it's about the usefulness of epithets to dismiss a political opinion you don't approve of. That has nothing to do with interpreting a word, and everything to do with the utility of using it in the first place. Not a difficult distinction to comprehend, or so I would have thought.

But the term "Useful Idiots" matters not who said it first.

I can accept that. Let's agree that Bush said it about the Republican base.
