Actually, that's not the "official line" from the Marines..

They know the SpecOps folks are waging much of this war on terror.. (Look at what they did in Afghanistan alone)..

They are doing even more here..

There are some issues with the Marine forces that are deployed here (training, tactics, leadership).. But that's pretty sensitive stuff that I prefer not to touch at this moment..

Well, time for bed... I have kind of missed hanging out here on SI.. It's keeps my brain sharp and makes me think about other things than just what my job entails..

Rumsfeld had to set on them to make it happen.

That is not how it is being viewed.

Many have always considered USMC Force Recon as part of the SpecOps community. And The Corps presently has several units well trained in hostage rescue, counter terrorism, etc, that have been quite willing to and have supported SOCOM OPS world-wide. The Marine unit will require and use air assets and combat support from other services. That should temper cross-service rivalries.

What has happened new is the relationship has been formalized and SOCOM has now completed the cross-fertilization of all branches of the service. More importantly, SOCOM now has another substantial unit they can move on a moments notice, without anyone else's approval, to support the WOT.
