The "best" (sorry, it's a sad one) story was the Italian truck driver on his way back home south, who after having just crossed the GDR boarder in Hirschberg on his way to enter FR Germany in Rudolphstein a mile away had an engine break down.

It happened right on the bridge between the 2 border stations, right between Thüringen and Bavaria on the border between the 2 German republics.

Since he was closer to GDR, he left his truck and started walking back on the bridge towards the East German side...

That's when he was shot down dead by the East German border patrol marksmen!

This of course created a major political scandal in Italy and between Italy and DDR (GDR).

The most amazing effect being that it opened the eyes of the very communist friendly Italian public of that time because they had no clue what was going on in their friendly communist East Germany.

That also was when the Italians first understood, that communist DDR were the largest jail in the world at the time, a place where people were shot dead if trying to cross the borders.

Another nail thus went into the Togliatti legacy coffin.
