Explanation can be simple - Qualcomm includes all fees in chipset price and from goodness of heart does not want to charge royalty on top of that.
If that does not fly - they could charge royalty always at full price, but lower by the same amount price of MSM. I doubt BRCM would be happy with that either.

I should put a caveat in my statement....I'm assuming that the mechanism for the royalty discount is in the IPR agreement. If it is instead in the chipset supply agreement, I would assume that the terms of those expire fairly regularly and can be renegotiated when that happens.

Engineer / Slacker, re: BRCM /NOK6 vs the Q and “, I think it is a fantasy to believe that Qualcomm can unilaterally raise the IPR rates on existing licenses.” <<<<<<<<

“Unilaterally”, far from it---- at the decree of the EC in response to BRCM and the NOK6 with the support of the GSMA . ..... or, “ the Devil made us do it”

Re: “whining fleet of 747's”

Exactly, I rather doubt that this complaint will endear BRCM with the Korean and other Asian Handset manufactures currently partnering with the Q. Talk about “shooting oneself in the foot” !!!! Now who is BRCM going to peddle their goods too, NOK, EMP, NEC? Maybe Panasonic.

WRT the above, did you catch Dr. Jacobs’ response to Modoff’s question if they had been speaking with the carriers yet with the reply>>>>> Not the carriers yet but with some of our handset partners.
