As far as I can reconstruct their demo, what they did was transmit a known, periodic signal, and had a filter at the receiving end specifically designed to take advantage of that known, repeating signal. I will certainly concede that if you know what is being sent, it may be possible to hear signals quieter than the ambient noise.

The question is...in the general case, why would you need to?
