US secretary of state Henry Kissinger warned against the "catastrophic consequences of a debacle" in Vietnam and any rushed withdrawal of US forces.

"To argue that a collapse of the US in Vietnam would not have consequences is simply living in a dream world," Kissinger told a meeting of NATO.

"American abdication in Vietnam will have global consequences if a Communist state were to emerge in Saigon."
