The term "elective abortion" is a medical term of art, which is distinct from "therapeutic abortion" (also a medical term of art). From an NIH website, "Elective abortions are those initiated by personal choice. Therapeutic abortions are those recommended by the health care provider to protect the mother's physical or mental health. In the United States, one legal abortion occurs for every four live births."

I suppose you could argue that it's also a woman's choice to have a therapeutic abortion rather than die or suffer permanent health injury, but that's not the way the term is used.

The term elective abortion is used for abortions for reasons of personal convenience or even personal whim. I once knew a woman who claimed that she had an abortion just because she was wondering what they were like.
