I dug through a number of auto accident statistics a while back.

If certain conditions are met, cars can be very safe.

Those are -
Daytime hours, prefrable 7am - 5pm
Good weather
Not Drunk
Not a teenager
about 3-5 years driving experience.

With these criteria, automotive travel is slightly safer than average US commericial airline flights.
Changing any of the above criteria raises the risk considerably.
Of course, some of those flights occur in bad weather.

We can add to that few pedestrians, and preferable a limited access highway.

The social and economic utility of private cars can very high.

"Cars are not exactly object of desire or machismo" means: I was trying to tell Daddunes to relax. I, personally, doesn't have this attachment to cars to a point that I would envy someone.

Usually the envy is for someone who find his objective out of reach.
