Qcom has a cross license with TXN for the GSM IPR it needed for WCDMA. In exchange, TXN got a royalty free right to make cdma chips using Qcom's IPR.

When the patents expire, Qcom should have developed more essential patents. As the phones and infrastructure go forward, with higher technology, then Qcom hopefully can maintain its lead with new essential patents and continued better and faster chip design and design of systems for the intra folks to use.
