There is a UN resolution calling for democracy to be forced on Iraq though. And the vast majority of Iraqis desire democracy. They even defied terroristic threats and acts to vote for it.

That fails to address the fact that a sizeable minority (some polls using various wording would indicate a majority) of Iraqis don't want it forced on them by the USA. That is the point I'm trying to make. I'm pretty sure that 100 years from now many of the fundamentalist churches will treat at least women equitably, if not gays. The change will come from internal efforts though, not by external forces.

BTW, I can think of two counter examples in American religion to my above point, both involving Mormons: 1) Polygamy and 2) Blacks. Both were somewhat an acceptance of external pressure changing internal religious beliefs. I'm sure there are others in American history as well.
