FYI, here is the answer to my original question regarding the new Treasury Direct accounts. "Your TreasuryDirect account must be registered in your name and social security number alone. However, your electronic savings bonds may be registered in your name alone, your name with a secondary owner, or your name with a beneficiary. Gift bonds may be registered in the same forms, but you cannot be named on them except as beneficiary. Each registrant's social security number must be shown. · Access your account with your TreasuryDirect account number and password. · Click the Manage Direct tab at the top of the page. · Under the heading “Manage My Account,” click Update my Registration List. · Click Add to display the next page. · Select the “Type of Registration” you want: Sole Owner, Primary Owner, or Beneficiary. · Enter the name(s) and social security number(s) in the spaces provided. (If you are buying the bond for yourself, you must be the “First-Named Registrant.” If you are buying it as a gift for someone else, you must either leave your name off of the bond or list yourself as beneficiary.) · If you want this registration to appear at the top of your “Registration List” when using “Buy Direct” to purchase bonds, or if you want to use this registration when buying bonds with “Purchase Express,” select the box for “Make this my preferred registration.” · If bonds with this registration are gifts for someone, select the box beside “This is a gift.” · Click Submit to complete the process. · The registration you just created will appear in the “Registration List” where you can choose it when making purchases with “Buy Direct.” Best wishes, I2
