07:13 SNDK A Threat to SanDisk - Barron's Online (65.14 )

According to Barron's Online, last week, some were studying the prospectus of Saifun Semiconductors, an Israeli company with a new technology for flash memory with twice the capacity of that now sold by SanDisk, Toshiba, Samsung Electronics and Intel (INTC). Most flash makers now offer chips that store two bits of data per cell, using a technique licensed from SanDisk. But this so-called Multi-Level Cell flash runs more slowly and is harder to shrink than traditional flash technology. Saifun uses a different technology to store multiple bits of data in each transistor. So Saifun-style chips could sell for half the price. After initially partnering with Infineon Technologies (IFX) to make the chips, Saifun has decided to license its technology to other chip makers. Saifun's unconventional technology isn't all that could hurt flash leaders like San- Disk. New manufacturing capacity in conventional flash is on the way from entrants like Hynix Semiconductor. The article suggests high-riding investors should watch their footing.
