I would submit that gender, ethnicity, and religion are all but irrelevant. At least they should be. And we do ourselves no favor by hyping them as relevant.

The way an elite university selects its freshman class is probably a good way to look at things. Gender is probably the first thing they try to balance. After that, I don't think Harvard will have an all Jewish or Asian freshman class.
