As I recall, Midnight Cowboy was a city movie not a western. John Voight played the mixed up kid opposite Dustin Hoffman as Ratso.

Jon Voight did a good job as Call in "Return to Lonesome Dove" which was a knockoff of McMurty's original containing some of the same cast as Lonesome Dove. I enjoyed the movie, although McMurtry was careful to make the knockoff more or less impossible by killing off key people like Newt Dobbs and portraying the Montana ranch a failure more or less "off camera" in his novel "The Streets of Laredo." James Garner played Call in that movie. All three of the movies were pretty memorable to me, and I own them on tape.

What is your nomination for the first gay cowboy movie?
