Well the governorship of NJ must be very lucrative. Why else would the candidates spend a combined 70+ million for the election? One can only conclude that there is one nice payoff in the end. I don't understand the different forms of payoff for a winning candidate, and I don't think Americans do either. There has to be some kind of huge reward for winning a seat in govt.

And talking about dirty politics. An individual running for a City Council position in my little town was followed and secretly recorded. The recording was then put on the Internet on a blog. He wasn't doing anything illegal, just having his picture taken next to an opponents yard sign, but those opposed to his candidacy made it appear he was doing something malicious or illegal. Makes me wonder who else this person/group is secretly recording. Creepy!

One certainly has to have a strong stomach to run for a political position, but the fight must be worth it either monetarily or personally or both. I suspect the money is better than the personal gratification.
