I can compare Walmart to Target two different ways.

Qua store, Target is more upscale and more enjoyable to shop in, especially for the types of things women are likely to buy a lot of, like clothing, cleaning supplies, kitchen gadgets and so on. The aisles are more spacious and the layout is nicer, so it's more pleasant to shop in.

Qua store, Walmart has a bigger selection of things like hardware, auto supplies, stuff for your yard. It's also more crowded, and the aisles are narrower, so it's less pleasant to shop in.

As socioeconomic phenomenon, as in "the Walmartization of America" I see them as functional equivalents. How could they not be? Big box stores with cheap prices that kill all the little stores.
