The living standards of even the lowest paid workers in the US are far higher than they were 50 or 100 years ago. Mostly because the real cost of virtually all commodities (energy, food, clean water, etc) have been dropping in relation to incomes for as long as history has been recorded. People in the US and in the world at large are getting richer over long time periods because stuff is becoming easier to make, food is easier to grow.
