SAN JOSE, Calif. — Taiwanese silicon foundry provider United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) said that business continues to improve amid seasonal demand and other factors.

UMC’s October sales were NT$9.04 billion ($268 million), down 10.2 percent from the like period a year ago but up 6.35 percent from September.

After a lackluster first half of 2005, UMC recently posted strong results in the third quarter due to strength in its 90-nm foundry business.

For Q4, UMC expects wafer ASPs to increase by low single-digit level. Capacity utilization is expected to hit approximately 85 percent.

The utilization rate for the third quarter was 78 percent, which was higher than the approximately 75 percent level that UMC expected. This compares to 78 percent utilization in the previous quarter and 94 percent a year ago (see Oct. 26 story).
