I saw Koufax and Drysdale both lose on the same day ... September 1, 1965 ... Forbes Field ... Pittsburgh took a twinight doubleheader from the Dodgers in one of the greatest pennant races of all time. It went down to the wire with LA barely getting past SF and the Pirates.

I'll never forget the rain on the last day of August that caused that twinight doubleheader to be scheduled. I was in heaven with the prospect of the Buccos taking on both Koufax and Drysdale. I believe the two victories put the Pirates briefly in first place. They would have won the National League pennant had they not gotten off to a hideous 9-24 start.

ESPNews took note of the 40th anniversary this past September 1.
