I think that the definition of "getting by" has expanded. It isn't unusual to see a family of four with three or four cars, one for each member if they have driving teenagers. A cell phone for each as well as a TV and computer. These are now considered basic necessities. Just look around and see just how many things require plugging in around your own house.

I have tenants that have no more than $1400/month in SS income combined. With that they pay the rent, utilities, food and expenses, have a couple cable TVs, a computer, a digital camera, a cell phone, regular phone, fax machine and various other subscription services as well as cover their prescriptions. I'm not saying it's easy and the rent on my house is probably under the market somewhat, but they seem to live a lot better than I did when I was making a similar amount (inflation adjusted) having just graduated from college in the late 70s.
