My opinion FWIW : OIL ! The North Iraqi oil fields are almost the only "unexploited" oil fields left in the world. The reason : Sadam's presence in Iraq for ca. 30 years. I think Bush was "manipulated with information" to allow the US ( Cheney, Rumsfeld ) to move in on that oil - the excuse was simple, Sadam is dangerous! I have a report fromk the Uni-Salzburg published in 2002 which goes into this in depth. Cheney made US-foreign policy synonimous with "Securing US Energy Sources" IMO. BTW.. the US-military burn one heck of a lot of oil - without which, the US-military becomes far less powerful.
